Lithographed map, hand-colored. 52.8x43.5 cm (20¾x17¼") plus decorative border, folding into original blindstamped cloth covers lettered in gilt on front cover, with 16 pp. text "Appendix to Jackson's Map of the Mining District of California, bringing down all the Discoveries since 1849..." Second Edition of map and appendix.
The striking, brightly colored second edition of Jackson's important and influential map of the mineral regions of California, expanding upon the important and influential, but rather plain, first edition of the preceding year. Gary Kurutz, in California 49, Map 31, after describing the first edition, turns to this one: "A year later, Lambert & Lane published a much more elaborate and revised edition, designed to reflect the mining engineer's additional experience and the acute demand for directions to the diggings. Reflecting the region's surging growth, Jackson incorporated many more cities, towns, and camps, and designated county boundaries. In the southern mining region, mining companies are located and named. Curiously, Jackson in this version, shows the Sierra Nevada extending as far west as Marysville! Printed with an ornate border and folded into a compact protective case, the 1851 edition featured an enlarged appendix of 16 pages. Perhaps based on his own labors, he warned: 'We could not advise any one who is doing well at home, to venture to California.'" Warren Heckrotte makes an interesting observation regarding the much more elaborate presentation of the second edition, based on his research: "A W.A. Jackson, Virginia, is listed among the guests attending a dinner in London, 27 October, 1851.The mapmaker Jackson was from Virginia and it seems reasonable to assume that this is the Jackson attending the dinner. I've thought that this version of his map, which is much more decorative than the rather plain first edition, was prepared to be part of his presentation in selling California gold mines. The list appears in: 'An Account of the Proceedings at the Dinner given by Mr George Peabody to the American connected with the Great Exhibition at the London Coffee House on 27th October, 1851,' introduction by Henry Stevens. London, William Pickering, 1851. Jackson may have been exhibiting specimens of California gold."
