Lithographed map, hand-colored. 86x73 cm (33¾x28¾"), folding into gilt-lettered blindstamped cloth covers, 18x11 cm (7x4¼").

Rare map of California, with large inset "Map of the United States of America, Mexico, Central America, Cuba &c" in upper right. Copyrighted and printed in New York. Wheat describes the map as "the most elaborate map of California that had yet appeared. It is beautifully designed and drawn, and includes a large number of mining towns, though it cannot be entirely commended for accuracy." Warren Heckrotte notes that "This map is much rarer than Gibbes' map of the gold region, 1851." OCLC/WorldCat lists four copies: British Library; California State Library-Sutro Library; University of California, Berkeley; and Yale. On the inside of the front cover is the label: "Bought of Ide & Dutton, Publishers, Booksellers & Stationers, and Dealers in all kinds of maps and school apparatus. No. 138 1/2 Washington Street"; along with the TWS bookplate of Thomas W. Streeter.
