Cabinet Map of California & Nevada (wrapper title)

Blanchard, Rufus

Rufus Blanchard

Lithographed map, hand-colored. 27.5x27 cm (10¾x10½"), folding into stiff orange paper wrappers lettered in black, advertisement for Blanchard's Cabinet Map of the United States on inside of front cover.

Rare little map of California and Nevada during boom times in the Silver State, and ongoing development in California financed in large part by the mineral wealth of Nevada. The few rail lines are shown, and those proposed, the connection to the East not quite accomplished. Lake Tahoe is called Lake Bigler. Warren Heckrotte notes that "This map is an excerpt of his [Blanchard's] Cabinet Map. I have a copy of the Cabinet Map of the United States. The map of the United States is essentially a copy of the General Land Office's Map of the United States. This map of California and Nevada shows very few details except for locations of various mineral resources and the land that has been surveyed by the General Land Office." OCLC/WorldCat does not locate any copies of this map.

Provenance: K. Harrison, 2/95
