Cabinet Map of the United States and Territories on a rectangular projection showing the location of gold silver and other minerals, the Railroads and Principal Cities...

Blanchard, Rufus

Published by Rufus Blanchard

Lithographed map printed on both sides of a single sheet, hand-colored. Each side approx. 72.5x71 cm (28½x28") plus decorative border; folding into gilt-lettered blindstamped cloth covers, with 7-page list of maps available from Blanchard tipped to front pastedown.

Large (when one takes into account that the western half of the U.S. is on one side, the eastern half on the other) map of the United States, with large inset on western half of the world, showing the sea and land routes between and among the continents, and a large inset on the eastern half replicating a map from 1795 showing the then-western territories of the newly minted United States. There are a few vignettes of fauna and frontier life, etc, in areas of no detail. Rivers, railroads, towns, cities, mineral deposits, and more are delineated, including the route of the nearly finished transcontinental railroad, and the steamship lanes to California. The map is a very close copy of the General Land Office map of the United States.

Provenance: Dawsons

References: W-TW 1197 for the western half only, published in 1869. Chicago Mapmakers lists this map and the western half, 1869; and has a chapter on Blanchard.

Lot Amendments

Folder worn and splitting along spine; tape repair through California including San Francisco on western half, affecting only Atlantic Ocean on eastern half; very good.
