Engraved map, hand-colored in outline. 59.5x88 cm (23½x24½"), backed with linen & sectioned for folding, with original cloth slipcase with Wyld's paper title label "Oregon District", 23x13.3 cm (9x5¼").
Rare issue of the map from the Wilkes atlas, being a close copy of the original by Wilkes, but with much of the hachuring of mountains omitted as well as the representation of wooded areas. The boundaries of the Indian tribes are colored so that the ethnographic character of the map is emphasized. There is a large inset of the Columbia River from Ft. Walla Walla to the Pacific Ocean. OCLC/WorldCat lists only eight copies of the map, and it is very scarce in the trade. Label of the Manchester Geographical Society on verso.
