Lithographed map. 33.5x39 cm. (13¼x15¾").

Detailed map of the populated areas of San Francisco, oriented to the west. Nearly identical to the map issued in Gazlay's San Francisco Business Directory for 1861, but this example has no folds. Extends west to Divisadero; south to Alta. Britton & Rey were located on Mongomery St at the corner with Commercial St. between 1854 and 1858 (Peters, California on Stone, p. 162). Colville's Directory, 1856, has a similar map. The map apparently was also issued with a report of 4/19/56 by the Commission regarding Western Addition. The location of a number of buildings are designated by letters; a key to letters is not on the map, which indicates that the map was issued with text. Since there are no folds in this copy, it was undoubtedly issued as a separate. It has a neatly printed number 55 on a small piece of paper affixed in lower margin. One interesting feature is the tracing of the original shoreline of San Francisco, showing just how much of the city is built on landfill.
