Map of California, Oregon, Texas, and the Territories adjoining with Routes &c
Colton, Joseph Hutchins
New York

Lithographed map, hand-colored. Lithographed by Ackermans, printed on heavy paper with no folds. 49.2x42 cm (19½x16½") plus decorative border.

Rare, separate issue of this seminal map that also appeared in Jesse Quinn Thornton's California and Oregon in 1848, and in later editions Edwin of Bryant's, What I Saw in California, both on thin paper. This map differs from the copies in the books in that it does not have the Scale of Statute Miles below title. The map extends east to the eastern border of Texas and Independence, Missouri. One of the most famous maps of the Gold Rush era, it is basically a combination of the 1848 maps of Fremont and Tanner, and is among the best of the commercial maps rushed to press in 1849 to meet the clamor for details on the route to California and location of the gold fields. This map appears identical in geography to the third 1849 issue of Colton's "Map of the United States of America, the British Provinces, Mexico..." However, Texas has lost the narrow extension going up to 42º lat. which is indicated by coloring on the map of the United States.

Provenance: Alta California Books, 1/70

References: W-GR 73. W-TW 593. Wheat notes a separate issue.
