Lithographed map, hand-colored. Lithographed by Britton & Rey. 76.6x63 cm (30¼x24¾"), originally dissected and mounted on linen, now removed and laid down on rice paper with pieces fitted together. Third edition, second state.
Rare issue of Goddard's important map of California, the 1857 first edition of which is noted in California 49 as "the first reasonably accurate and complete map of the state. Towns, great and small, county boundaries, stage and wagon roads, including a few that traverse the Sierra Nevada, and California's first railroad from Sacramento to Folsom appear. None of the errors found on Eddy's map are present. Lake Tahoe... is shown at its correct location..." Of the present edition Warren Heckrotte notes: "The western part of Nevada has been remapped as compared with the first edition, but follows very closely the second edition. A significant addition is the notice of the silver discoveries: Virginia City and Gold Hill appear and the area about is labeled Silver Region... A note on J.H. Simpson's map "Map of Wagon Routes in Utah Territory" (in Report of explorations across the Great Basin..., Washington, 1876) - states that Goddard's 1860 map was used in preparation of the map." The first state of the third edition has "issued after the Adjournment of the Legislature 1858" in the title.
Provenance: K. Harrison, 12/93
References: Not listed by Wheat. Rowell and Vogdes list a map with the same title, but without Goddard's name and give larger scale (20 m = 1"); I suspect that they are describing Goddard's map and have made errors of omission and commission. Bancroft has two copies. BL catalogue lists the third edition, but not the first or second. Orozco y Berra, no. 1052.
Condition:
Originally very worn; with removal from linen and cleaning it is now quite bright. However there are numerous missing pieces, particularly around border, and at some of old fold intersections. "3rd Edn of" is mostly missing. Thus very good.
