Lithographed map, printed in sepia. Lithographed by Britton & Co. On four sheets of very thin paper, joined together with paper strips on verso. Overall 66.5x96.5 cm (26¼x34").
Rare map of northwestern Mexico and Baja California, with the adjacent borderlands of the United States. There is a title in English as well, in smaller type, "New Map of Sonora Chihuahua Sinaloa Durango & Lower California." Gold mines and other mineral resources are indicated. The map was not folded. Warren Heckrotte notes that "Fleury was a Coronel and Gefe [chief] engineer in Sonora and apparently a member of the French contingent then holding power in Mexico. The map was revised in 1881 and issued in Hamilton, Leonidas. Border States of Mexico: Sonora, Sinaloa, Chihuahua, and Durango, second edition, San Francisco, 1881. The revised issue may also have been issued separately." Maps printed in sepia are unusual, and it looks a little faded because of it. The present copy was restored by Karan Zukor, with wrinkles flattened, a crayon mark removed, the sheets reattached.
Further Notes from the Files of Warren Heckrotte
