Report of the Committee on Internal Improvements with Reference to a Road Across the Sierra Nevada, Submitted April 10, 1855

Day, Sherman

B.B. Redding, State Printer

13 pp., + [3] blank pp. (8vo) 8¾x5¾, later plain wrappers, in modern half morocco folding case made by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. First Edition.

The report urged the construction of wagon roads across the Sierra Nevada to encourage immigration of settlers by land, instead of the fortune hunters who arrived by sea. As described in Wagner-Camp, "Presumably, the Mormons and the U.S. Army would establish and maintain the routes through the Rockies and across Nevada. The routes across the Sierra to be considered are: I. Bend of the Humboldt River to Mud Lakes, and Fredonyer's and Noble's Passes (or by way of `Lasson's' trail, Beckwith's trail, or the Downieville trail); Humboldt Sink and Truckee River-Donner Pass...; Mormon Trail to 'Cahon' Pass and Los Angeles..." Day's report mentions the famous "lost" guide book of O.B. Huntington; it was to have been published in Salt Lake City, but, so far as is known, this never occurred.

Provenance: PBA, 2/12/04
