Reise nach dem Felsengeburge im Jahre 1842 und nach dem Oregongebiet und Nord-Californien in den Jahren 1843 und 1844, von Capitain J.C. Fremont, Bürger der Vereinigten Staaten

Author:
Frémont, John Charles

Place:
[Leipzig]

Publisher:

Date:
[1848]

Description:

[2], [viii]-x, [263-447, [1] pp. Folding lithographed map. (8vo) 19x12.5 cm (7½x5"), later half cloth & marbled boards.

Abridged German edition of Frémont's "Report of the Exploring Expedition to the Rocky Mountains in the Year 1842, and to Oregon and North California in the Years 1843-'44...," issued as part of "Reisen Durch die Vereinigten Staaten von Nordamerika...," which contained accounts by numerous travelers, and is here excerpted from that work. The half-title to the Frémont portion is followed by its table of contents (with the first leaf laid down), the body of text, and an errata leaf. The folding map, measuring 25.5x36.5 cm, is "Die Vereinigten Staaten von Nordamerica und deren Territorien nebst Canada 1848." Wheat comments on the map, which shows the U.S. as it was to be, and a bit of Canada: "The map includes California, but contains little detail. Frémont's route is shown without explanatory legend. The gold discoveries are not mentioned." There are two pages of manuscript in German at the front, being a biographical sketch of Frémont, and a newsclipping of his obituary tipped in.
