Lithographed maps, surrounded by duotone lithographed scenes, views, etc. Each approx. 25x35 cm (9¾x13¾"), on sheets 46x59 cm (18x23¼"); folding into original embossed cloth covers lettered in gilt "Mapa de la Isla de Cuba y Plano de la Habana," 16.5x11 cm (6½x4¼").
Scarce pair of maps of Cuba and Havana, with captivating views of the island, its buildings, cities, citizens, etc. Warren Heckrotte comments that "These maps also appeared in Album Pintoresco de La Isla de Cuba, 1853, consisting of title page, 26 lithographic plates and the two folding maps. The plates were taken from Mialhe's Viaje pintoreso al rededor dela isla de Cuba, 1847. This is taken from Reese's cat. 164, 5/97, item 26. It seems uncertain where the work was produced: Berlin, Hamburg or Cuba. Reese's refs are: Cueto, Mialhe's Colonial Cuba, pp 73-77 and passim. Sabin 17748. Palau 5421. The views along margin do not appear in illustrations in book." Quite uncommon as issued in the folder, OCLC/WorldCat listing only four examples, at Cornell, University of California Santa Barbara, University of Florida, and Duke.
