Thomas Pennant (1726-1798), traveller and naturalist, published many books on natural history and accounts of his tours around the British Isles and beyond. He was described by Samuel Johnson as having a "greater variety of inquiry than almost any man". According to publishing legend these two volumes comprise Volumes 1 & 2 of an intended 14-volume series "Outlines of the Globe." These two volumes appeared in 1798, but only two more volumes, on China and Japan, were published posthumously. Cox I, 307
