Manuscript account ledger book for the Baltimore & Philadelphia Railroad

[11] index leaves + 38-320 pp. Handwritten in ink throughout on ruled accounting paper. 34.5x20.5 cm (13½x8"), half leather and marbled boards.

Fascinating and truly significant ledger book revealing details of an important episode in U.S. railway history in the latter part of the 19th century. The Baltimore and Philadelphia Railroad line was built by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad from Philadelphia to Baltimore after the B&O lost access to its previous route to Philadelphia, the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad. Construction began around 1884, and was completed in 1886. The cost of building the new route, especially the Howard Street Tunnel on the connecting Baltimore Belt Line, led to the B&O's first bankruptcy. The present ledger book contain financial details of the construction, from the purchase of nuts, bolts, steel and struts to steam pumps, hand drills, lumber and much more. Labor costs are also detailed, and also supplies of foodstuffs, and many other incidentals.
