Edward Mendel, Lithographer, Engraver and Map Publisher, Lake Street 162 & 164 cor. La Salle, Chicago

Mendel, Edward

Lithographed advertising print with map. 15.5x23 cm (6x9") on sheet 18x26 cm (7x10¼").

Advertising print for the Chicago lithographer. OCLC/WorldCat lists only one example, at the American Antiquarian Society, and this seems to be a variant. The AAS describes their copy: "Five sepia vignettes surround advertising text and the image of a partially rolled up map of Washington, D.C., Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey (all printed in green). The vignette at center shows the large and busy 'Great Central Union Depot.' Two sentimental vignettes at upper left and right depict a young woman in profile and a woman with a child. At lower right, a female figure (presumably America personified) draped in stars and stripes carries a sword and a shield with the American eagle on it. At lower left, a female figure with a star-spangled Phrygian cap, sword, and shield may be Liberty or America personified." In the present example, the center vignette is a large American bald eagle resting on a patriotic shield, a ribbon in its mouth reading "State Sovereignty, National Union," with a train at the right, a steamboat to the left. The print can be dated by the fact that Edward Mendel is listed at 162 Lake St. in Chicago city directories from 1858 to 1868.

Lot Amendments

A touch of offsetting from printed text that previously faced the lithograph; very good or better.
