Investigation into the convoluted finances of John Charles Frémont's Mariposa Estate, which he acquired in 1847 amidst some controversy, and which was to make him at least a temporary fortune, since it contained three profitable gold mining districts. Notable for the large color map, "Las Mariposas Estate, Mariposas County, California. Containing 44,386 83/100 Acres or 70 Square Miles," 63x50 cm. (15x19½"). The margins of the map are trimmed close to the neat line; this probably accounts for the lack of note, Max Strobel Engineer, in the lower right margin which appears in earlier appearances of the map. Warren Heckrotte notes that "The map is the same as appeared in two earlier books on the Mariposa Estate, 1861 and 1863. According to the text in the 1861 publication, The Mariposas Estate, this map is taken from the Patent issued to Fremont for the land." Bookplate of Roger K. Larson.
