Scarce combined edition of the two works promoting travel and emigration to the gold country at the height of the Gold Rush. The first is an imaginary voyage,  so convincing that it was accepted as fact well into the twentieth century.  Bryant's work, published in 1848 has been called "one of the most detailed and reliable of all the overland journals" and is of further interest because of its description of the life and times of American Californians before the discovery of gold. The map, "The Gold Districts of Alta California," (11.5x17 cm),  lithographed by Thierry Freres, shows most of California and parts of Nevada, and has the northern mining districts outlined in gold. It is a close copy of the one which appears in the English edition of Brooks.
