Volume III (of 6) only. [2], xviii, [2], 21-635 pp. With 39 engraved plates including added title-page, some printed in sepia, a few folding; 4 folding engraved maps. (4to) 27.5x19 cm (10¾x7½"), original cloth with gilt-stamped vignette on front cover, spine lettered in gilt. Second printing.

The third volume in Schoolcraft's notable compilation on the native tribes of North America, with numerous illustrations from drawings and sketches by Captain Seth Eastman, and four notable maps, three of which are credited to Eastman. The maps are itemized below. Warren Heckrotte notes as well the "Journal of the Expedition of Colonel Redick M'Kee United States Indian Agent, through North-western California. Performed in the Summer and Fall of 1851. By George Gibbs," which occupies pp. 99-177, stating that "The article by Gibbs is a very interesting account of an exploration in North-Western California. Gibbs was conversant with Jedediah Smith's map of the west and makes several comments on Smith's map in this account." The maps in the volume are:

• Map showing the Location of the Indian Tribes of the United States.
• Map of the Tribes in Oregon.
• Map of the Country formerly occupied by the Iowa.
• Map of De Soto's Route in 1541-42
