This copy was never sewn, trimmed, or bound. The folding map, which is loose, is "Map of the Yosemite Valley from Surveys made by order of the Commissioners to manage the Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Big Tree Grove by C.King and J.T.Gardiner 1865," (39.5x64.3 cm). It is the second state of the map, as delineated by Warren Heckrotte, "The course of the Merced river has been changed. The hotels are identified. The imprint at lower right is now that of Julius Bien instead of NY Lithg Engrg & Pritg Co. Bill Warren has found a third state at the Huntington Library. There are considerable changes and added detail in the Valley and a few corrections outside of Valley." A reduced photocopy of the third state of the map accompanies the lot. The map of the portion of the Sierra Nevada is not present.
