Two ink sketches of centaur figures
Kley, Heinrich
[Early 20th century]

Two ink sketches, on opposite sides of a single sheet. Approximately 14x21 cm (5½x8¼"), matted and framed (both sides of sheet viewable). Overall 37x52 cm (10¾x20½").

A great pair of images, one showing a centaur figure at a fast gallop, the other side showing a more aged figure an iron and envelope in hand. Heinrich Kley (1863–1945?) was a German illustrator, editorial illustrator and painter. Kley studied "practical arts" at the Karlsruhe Akademie and finished his studies in Munich. His early works were conventional portraits, landscapes, still-life, city scenes and historical paintings. Kley attained greater notoriety with his sometimes darkly humorous pen drawings, many appearing in periodical such as Jugend and Simplicissimus. Provenance: Butterfield & Butterfield Sale 3774P, March 12, 1987. Small label of the S.F.M.A. at lower right on rear of frame.
