xvii, [3], 298 pp. Half-title. With additional duotone lithographed pictorial title; 9 tinted lithographed plates; 3 hand-colored lithographed plates; 9 wood engravings in the text. (8vo) 24x14.5 cm. (9½x5¾"), early full polished black calf, borders in blind and gilt, spine gilt, red leather title label, all edges marbled. First Edition.
Perhaps most noteworthy for the beautiful tinted lithographs from paintings by David Wilkie, Edwin Landseer, Charles Landseer, William Simson, and Edward Cooke; these were withdrawn from the second edition of 1854, although the two hand-colored lithographs of salmon were retained. Westwood & Satchell notes that "copies of the first edition are scarce and sell for about 6 pounds," not a small sum in 1881. Westwood & Satchell p.191.
Condition:
Some scuffs to binding, edges rubbed, previous owners' names on front endpapers; light foxing, early drawing of a hooked fish on rear flyleaf, with instructions for using a "lip-hook" in manuscript; very good.
