Featuring pictorial sections on George Washington Carver, Matthew Henson, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Paul Robeson (plus several wartime heroic soldiers and sailors), and with an introduction by boxer Joe Louis. Though a collection of true stories rather than a fictional fantasy of the Super Man variety, this was the first “Black Hero” comic book, apparently predating by several months a more traditional ”All-Negro Comics” rarity which now brings up to $10,000 on the collectibles market. The Urban League’s Negro Heroes No. 2 – the last issue of the series – appeared the following year, highlighting the lives of Jackie Robinson and “Woman of the Year” Sadie Alexander.
