Broadside calling upon the citizens of Baja California to defend Mexico from invasion by the Spanish

Riveroll, Teodoro

La Paz

December 11, 1861

Singe sheet, watermarked laid paper. 31.5x22.5 cm (12¼x8¾").

Rare broadside calling for the citizenry to defend Mexico from the French intervention in Mexico by the forces under Maximilian, which backed at the beginning by Spain and Great Britain, sparked by the suspension of interest payments to foreign countries by President Benito Juarez but part of a broader plan to expand the French empire. In the beginning Spain, ever the enemy after centuries as the colonial overlord of Mexico, was felt the primary threatening force, and perhaps an easier one to rally the Mexicans against. Quite rare: no copies are listed in OCLC/WorldCat.
