A Geography for Beginners

Stewart, Kensey Johns

Richmond, VA

J.W. Randolph

viii, 223 pp. With 10 folding maps, 5 single page maps. Engravings in the text. 17.5x10.5 cm (7x4¼"), original gilt-lettered cloth.

Scarce Civil War era Virginia imprint. The folding maps are by George Philip & Son, London & Liverpool. Water is printed in blue. The single page maps are titled physical maps and are rather simply executed; the maker is not identified. Warren Heckrotte comments that "There is very little on the conflict between the North and South. The text states that it began with the attempt of the North to subjugate the South. The only battle mentioned is that which initiated the war at Charleston. The text states that 'the people of the Southern States have fought their own way to political independence and the respect and amity of the great nations of the world'. The Confederate States are not shown on the relevant maps; only the United States. Curious." OCLC/WorldCat lists only two copies, at Stanford University and at Washington & Lee Library. Parrish and Willingham 7923. Crandall 4107.
