A further legislative attempt to spur the discovery of a Northwest Passage, described in some detail by Lada-Mocarski: "Parliament... had already passed an Act offering a reward of £20,000 'to the owner of the vessel discovering a North West Passage,' stating however that such passage be discovered through 'Hudson Streights,' thus making it necessary for the discovering ship or ships to start from the Atlantic side... The present described Act, however, broadened the conditions for the reward by adding that 'if any ship or vessel, ships or vessels, belonging to any of His Majesty's subjects, or to His Majesty, shall find out and sail through any passage by sea, between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, in any direction... or parallel of the Northern Hemisphere to the Northward of the fifty-second degree of Northern latitude' the reward would be granted. The amount of the reward remained at £20,000 and a further amount of £5,000 was added to those British subjects who would approach to within one degree of the Northern Pole..." Lada-Mocarski 25.
