Description:

Pp. 407-435. Color lithographed map of California. (8vo) 25.5x17 cm (10x6½"), original printed wrappers.

Offprint from Bulletin de la Société Géologique de France, Troisième Série - Tome Onzième, 15 avril 1883. The map is "Carte Géologique de la Californie par Jules Marcou," 20x12.7 cm. Warren Heckrotte comments on the work, "The author begins by stating that a new exploration of California in the summer of 1875 allows him to make some observations and in addition to comment on facts and opinions of other explorers. On the latter point he criticizes J.D. Whitney on two scores: one, that he ignores the contributions of others to the subject of the geology of California; and, two, faults him for his theory of the formation of such valleys as Yosemite which was in contradiction to the commonly held, and correct, theory that glaciers were responsible." OCLC/WorldCat lists only one copy, at Harvard University's Tozzer Library, part of a bound collection of pamphlets by Marcou.
