Scarce treatise by the artist and West Point graduate, written when he was not yet 30, during the period when he taught topographic drawing at the U.S. Military Academy. He is more noted today for his observations and drawings of Native Americans of the frontier. In the preface, the author states that the book was written to meet "the want of a uniform system of topography in this country [and so]to aid in establishing a uniform and permanent system of topography in this country, as well as to render some assistance to the cadets of the Military Academy..."

Wear to binding, especially spine which has some pieces missing, some fading; dampstaining to about the first 36 pages, heavily at the beginning, some foxing to contents, good to very good.
