Description:

Title leaf + 159 plates containing plat maps of 1143 "squares" or blocks; folding engraved plan of the City of Washington in the Territory of Columbia in the year 1800; folding map of the City of Washington in the District of Columbia. (folio) 33x20 cm (13x7¾"), original gilt-lettered cloth, rebacked with modern cloth, new flyleaves. First Edition.

Significant atlas of Washington at mid-century, with two large folding maps, one of the capital city as it was just being built, the other in a more mature state fifty years later (the latter map with some repairs and a bit of loss, a red (wine) stain about 3" n diameter). There should be a third map, not present here. With ink ownership signature of William A. Birthe, Washington, July 17th, 1852, on front pastedown. There are a number of old pencil notes and notations within, often on the backs of the plates. A summary of the rebacking and restoration process, and the materials used, laid in.

We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS.  For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
