Mt. Lebanon to Vermont/Autobiography of George Haddad Taken down by his daughter...[with 'Syrian Recipes']
Author:
George Haddad
Place:
Rutland, Vermont
Publisher:
Tuttle
Date:
1916
Description:

First Edition. Original decorative cloth. Illustrated with photographs. 187pp. Probably the first American book of Lebanese recipes.

Eager to share with his new countrymen some “formulas for Oriental [meaning Middle Eastern] delicacies which will appeal to all housekeepers”, Haddad added to his personal story 35 pages of “Syrian Recipes”.  These Include Lendicke Soup with Lemon, Grilled Fish on Skewers, Baked Fish with Pignolis Sauce, Boabas (French Dish), Stuffed Grape Leaves, Stuffed Eggplants, Fried Spinach, Stuffed Tomatoes, David Pasha Meat Balls, Meat Balls a la Beyrouth, ‘Head of the Bird’, Fried Lambs Brains, Dandelions with Meat, Chicken Pudding, and, of course, Turkish Coffee.

Haddad's  family immigrated to the US in 1892 from “the district of Lebanon in Syria” (Modern-day Lebanon, part of Syria under the Ottoman Empire, did not become an independent nation until World War II.) This is his personal account of their good fortune in America and his travels back to the homeland while still under Turkish domination.
