Gass, Patrick

Mathew Carey

1811
Description:

viii, [2], [11]-262 pp. With 6 copper-engraved plates. 16.8x10 cm (6½x4"), period sheep. Third Edition.

Gass's Journal was the first detailed account by a member of the Lewis and Clark expedition to be published. This third edition has the same plates, imprint and pagination of the 1810 second edition, which was the first published account of the expedition to have illustrations. The artist is unknown but obviously was unprofessional and unfamiliar with most aspects of the expedition; still, the illustration are imbued with primitive charm, and helped form the public's impression of the Transmississippi West and the expedition. Graff 1520; Howes G77; Wagner-Camp 6:6.
