[x], [22] leaves of explanatory text in English on rectos and French on versos. 22 hand-colored stipple engravings. (Small folio) 35.5x25.5 cm. (14x10"), period gilt-ruled calf, rebacked with original gilt-tooled spine strip laid on, later endpapers. First Edition.

Series of twenty-two finely colored engravings graphically depicting various methods of torture and punishment employed by the Chinese. This is the first edition, with paper watermarked 1801. Abbey Travel 532. With two old armorial bookplates remounted on front pastedown when recased.


Lot Amendments

Condition:
Some rubbing and discoloration to covers, wear to original spine strip; light offsetting from some of the plates, overall quite clean, plates bright, internally near fine.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
