Lot closed - Sold For (Includes Buyers Premium):$2,400
$3,000 - $5,000

Handwritten Armenian manuscript from the late 17th century, of liturgical nature, in period tooled leather binding

Late 17th century

Approx. 177 leaves (likely incomplete). Written on paper in brown and red ink, single columns of 18 or 19 lines, in brown ink with first line of each pericope and line initials in red, with Canon table, Khorans, initial caps (Turchnagir and ornamental script) and the rest of the script in Notrgir. 16x13 cm (6¼x5"), period calf tooled in blind, spine rather crudely rebacked with sewn leather, suitable to the time.

Rare and captivating Armenian manuscript, apparently the Euchologion book of rituals, supplemented by prayers, Gospel pericopes and eclectic songs, seemingly originated by the 5th century saint Mesrob Mashdotz (Mashtots), inventor of the Armenian alphabet. Of great charm are the Trchnakir style bird initials on various leaves.

Lot Amendments

Rather worn, as may be expected, some soiling and mostly marginal staining within, one leaf torn out put present, some others possibly lacking; overall very good for its age and use, sold as is.
