The editor was sister to Samuel Chase of Maryland, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The first volume contains several poems attributed only to an "Edgar", much speculation has been made that these were the work of a very young Edgar Allan Poe, an attribution now largely dismissed. Well represented in institutional collections but quite rare in the trade with only a single copy appearing in auction in more than a century and that being the copy inscribed by Chase to Thomas Jefferson. In 1909 a copy appeared in the Anderson Auction Company sale of the collection of J. Chester Chamberlain.
