The author,, John Gauden (1605-1662),  was Bishop of Exeter, then advanced to Bishop of Worcester shortly before his death. More significantly, he was the reputed author of the important Royalist work Eikon Basilike. The marvelous folding plate, "The goodly Cedar of Apostolick & Catholick Episcopacy...." depicts how the Church has branched out over the centuries, with Jesus Christ at the base of the trunk (it is darkened at the fold with a little wear).
