Magnificent carved goblet made from Shakespeare’s Mulberry Tree

Marshall, John

Stratford on Avon

22 cm (8¾") high and 10.5 cm (4¼") in diameter. The bottom of the goblet’s base inscribed “I. Marshall - Carver - Stratford on Avon,” with carved lettering on the upper rim fittingly quoting a line from Hamlet: “We shall not look upon his like again.”

Rare and handsome wooden goblet carved in commemoration of the 300th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth – carved from the wood of the mulberry tree which Shakespeare himself planted in 1609 in the garden of his house “New Place” in Stratford-on-Avon. Though Shakespeare’s house was demolished in 1702, the gardens remained and in 1759 the mulberry tree was chopped down and cut into logs. Originally sold to Thomas Sharp, who himself carved small commemorative objects from the logs, the stock of wood remaining after Sharp’s death was later acquired by John Marshall.  Realistically speaking, objects carved from Shakespeare’s mulberry tree are the closest one can get to owning an item directly associated with by The Immortal Bard. The present is one of the finest known examples of Marshall’s Shakespeare carvings.
