The papers are from Reviews of Modern Physics,  Vol. 8, No. 2, April 1936, and Vol. 9, Nos. 2 and 3, April and May 1937, bound together in a single volume. Collectively, these three articles are informally known as Bethe's Bible and were the standard references in the field for many years, eventually being reprinted as a collection. Hans Albrecht Bethe was a German and American nuclear physicist who, in addition to making important contributions to astrophysics, quantum electrodynamics and solid-state physics, won the 1967 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the theory of stellar nucleosynthesis.
