Title:
Armilogia sive Ars chromocritica, the language of arms by the colours & metals: being analogically handled according to the nature of things, and fitted with apt motto’s to the heroical science of herauldry in the symbolical world. Whereby is discovered what is signified by every honourable partition, ordinary, or charge, usually born in coat-armour, and mythologized to the heroical theam [sic] of Homer on the shield of Achilles... By Sylvanus Morgan arms-painter

Author:
Morgan, Sylvanus

Place:
London

Publisher:
Printed by T. Hewer for Nathaniel Brook

Date:
1666

Description:

[16], 238 (of 239), [24 (of 25)] pp. A-Mm4 (-Ii4). With armorial shields in the text, most engraved in wood, some in copper. (4to) 20.5x15 cm. (8¼x5¼"), modern calf in antique style. First Edition.

Very rare and unusual treatment of heraldry from a symbolic and mystical point of view, paralleling the alchemical interest and literature of the period. This work  was intended as a complement to Morgan's 1661 work, The Sphere of Gentry, which is much more common. Etched portrait mounted on blank leaf before the title, apparently from another work, possibly The Sphere of Gentry. A very rare title; many copies probably burned in the Great Fire of London. Occasional early ink marginalia. Wing M2738.
