Estimate:

Title:
Dialogo del molto rever.do P. Don Gio. Battista Vimercato... De gli horologi solari: nel quale con ragioni speculative, et prattiche facilmente s'insegna il modo da fabricar tutte le sorti di horologi

Author:
Vimercato, Giovanni Battista

Place:
Venice

Publisher:
Appresso Gabriel Giolito de'Ferrari

Date:
1566

Description:

[32], 79, [1 blank], 89-130, [2] pp + 4 illustrated leaves at end & 1 folding plate. Numerous illustrations & diagrams in the text, including another folding plate. Woodcut device on title page, woodcut initials, head and tailpieces. (4to) 21x15 cm (8¼x5¾"), period limp vellum, inked spine title.

Influential and popular treatise on sun dials, quite uncommon. The present copy lacks leaf O1 (pp.105-109), but seems to be otherwise complete - the missing pages 81-88 seem to have been purposefully skipped in pagination, and made up for by the four leaves of illustrations at the end (signature R), which may have been intended to be bound in after p.[80]. The two folding plates called for are present.

Lot Amendments

Condition:
Covers worn and soiled, spine partially perished; tears to endpapers, two erasures to title page causing a hole but not affecting printing or woodcut, stub tears to folding plates; occasional foxing and marginal dampstains; overall very good.
