Manuscript notebook with 39 ink and watercolor drawings in illustration of 39 manuscript limericks

Lear, Edward, attrib.

No place

19th century

39 leaves with original ink and watercolor drawings, each illustrating an ink manuscript limerick on the verso of the facing preceding leaf; a few additional drawings follow without verses. 17.5x13.5 cm (7x5½"), half leather & cloth.

A curious and possibly unprecedented notebook with handwriting and watercolor drawings which are strongly reminiscent of those of Edward Lear, though not authenticated as by him. Nonetheless, the parallels are remarkable, both in style and execution, and certainly bear scholarly examination. Moreover, we have not been able to find any of the limericks as having been published or listed as being authored by Lear. These include: "There was a young spendthrift of Kent/ Whose fortune was rapidly spent;/ So he set up a shop,/ And sold ginger pop,/ This ruined young spendthrift of Kent." "There was a young scholar of Devon/ Who could not count up to eleven;/ He would almost believe,/ Two and two would make five,/ This ignorant scholar of Devon." Plus 37 others. A few of the drawings are on paper mounted to the leaves; none are signed. A charming representation of Victorian limericks, and perhaps a good deal more. Laid in is an old ink note: "Verses & Drawings by Edward Lear, English Artist and Humorist, 1812-1888."
