A complete set of first editions of Tolkien's magnificent trilogy, perhaps the greatest achievement in the realm of fantasy literature. Accompanied by a typed letter from Tolkien to British Ambassador Oscar Charles Morland. In full: Dear Mr. Morland, Thank you very much for the typed copies of your indexes. I think it is a very generous gift. It will probably be of considerable use to me when I have time to turn to the correction and improvement of the index provided in the revised edition of The Lord of the Rings published last year. It is the only index material I have received that takes in the Appendices, and these references will save me a lot of time. Thank you also for telling me of the pleasure you and your family have found in my works. Your sincerely, J.R.R. Tolkien." Letter dated 9th May, 1967 on embossed letterhead with 76 Sandfield Road address.

Lot Amendments
The Two Towers is dated 1954, not 1955.

Jacket spines sunned, lightly soiled, Return of the King a bit more so, prices not clipped; volumes lightly worn, again the third title a bit more so, slight lean to spines, endpapers browned and a bit spotted, previous owner's name on each front free endpaper (Tove Reventlow); books and jackets very good. Letter creased from mailing, small hole punched at upper left, otherwise fine.
