Extensively illustrated with engravings in wood and steel, 6 (of 7) maps (some folding), a chromolithograph of Frémont's Rocky Mountain flag, etc. (4to) 28.5x20.5 cm. (11¼x8"), original tan wrappers, pictorially printed in brown on front wrappers and with "Publisher's Announcement" for this work on the rear wrapper of each. Housed in the original brown cloth portfolio, the spine decorated like the first edition in book form. First Edition.

This copy without the large folding map by Preuss called for at page 120, as often. The plate called for at page 44 (Lost on the Prairie) is not present, there is however a plate at page 54 (Big Timber, Arkansas River) not called for on the plate list. The illustrations and maps are quite noteworthy. "Embraces his first three exploring expeditions and the part played by him in the conquest of California" (Howes) The death of the author in 1890 left the narrative unfinished. No copies in the original wrapper located in recent auction records, the most recent appearance located being at Anderson Galleries in 1922 where it was then already noted as "extremely rare" and as the only set in wrappers to have appeared to that date, though another set seems to have passed through Anderson in 1909 in the Library of Judge Granville P.
