Views of Sobre Vista, the Home of Col. Geo. F. Hooper in Sonoma Valley, California [inserted at the rear of a bound volume of 25 chromolithograph plates of Olives from Raffaello Pecori's Cultura Dell'Olivo (1891)]

San Francisco

H.S. Crocker & Co.

Single sheet, lithographed on both sides, 35.5x26.5 cm (14x10½"). Fold and inserted in to a half leather and marbled board quarto album 26.5x19 cm (10½x7½") containing 25 chromolithograph plates of olives.

The views show the home of Col. Hooper along with scenes of the olive, walnut, chestnut, and orange orchards at Sobre Vista. On the reverse side depictions of 11 varieties of olives, presumably grown at Sobre Vista. Quite rare, OCLC locates no copies. The sheet is folded at the center and affixed with paste to the rear board, partially obscuring one of the views. Sobre Vista, once a part of General Vallejo's Rancho, would later become the country estate of Rudolph Spreckels and later the estate of his sister-in-law Alma de Bretteville Spreckels. The beautiful chromolithographs of olives are from "Cultura Dell'olivo in Italia," bound here without the accompanying text, and are quite desirable in their own right.

Lot Amendments

Binding rubbed, a few plates closely trimmed; Sobre Vista flyer affixed to rear board; very good.
