Four original albumen photographs of sailboats on San Francisco Bay

[San Francisco]

Images approx. 18x23 cm (7x9"), on period cardstock mounts, which were subsequently glued to large period black cardboard mounts with gilt edges.

Rare original photographs of sailboats on San Francisco Bay at the turn of the last century. They are captioned on the back of the mounts in pencil or ink, and comprise:

  • "San Francisco Bar Pilot Schooner, Lady Mine. This handsome craft was built at Port Ludlow, Washington, in 1880, and measured 58 tons gross..." The manufacturers were the Hall Brothers, and the Lady Mine served the S.F. bar pilots for thirty years before being sold in 1911.The Hall Brothers were noted for having designed and built some of the finest sailing vessels ever constructed on the Pacific Coast. Of note, in 1891 Lady Mine had a deadly encounter with a whale, the first of several recorded pilot casualties.
  • "Schooner 'Bonita' of San Francisco Bay," tugging a small dinghy,  with dark fog obscuring the tops of the masts. The pilot schooner Bonita was designed and built by Hall Brothers in 1892 at the cost of $19,000.
  • "Fishing boat under way, San Francisco Bay."
  • "San Francisco Bay."
