Rare reminiscences of service in the Civil War by four provided, noted by Nevins as "Singularly unique, for this volume is composed largely of the letters from the field of four Massachusetts brothers; all served in the Army of the Potomac." The author, Robert G. Carter, later served in the Indian wars of the west, and wrote a number of scarce and sought-after accounts of those experiences. This copy signed on the front free endpaper by, apparently, James Walker Benét, dated New York, 22.12.13. James was the son of Brigadier General Stephen Vincent Benét, and father of author Stephen Vincent Benét, who wrote the Civil War epic poem, John Brown's Body, among other works. J.W. Benét was a lifelong army officer before his retirement in 1921. Provenance: Thomas Benét, grandson of James Walker Benét and son of Stephen Vincent Benét.
