Postcard version of the proclamation by Mayor E.E. Smitz of San Francisco authorizing police to kill looters following the 1906 earthquake and fire

San Francisco

Printed postcard. 13.5x8 cm. (5¼x3¼"). Rare postcard reproducing the famous broadside proclamation issued by Mayor Schmitz, one of the most ominous mementos of the earthquake and fire. "The Federal Troops, the members of the Regular Police Force and all Special Police Officers have been authorized to KILL any and all persons found engaged in looting or in the commission of any other crime…" The rest of the twenty-two line text explains that electricity and gas have been turned off, requests citizens to remain at home from dusk until dawn, and warns of the danger of fire from damaged chimneys, etc. The Altvatar printing shop, which printed the original broadside, was located at Mission and 22nd, safely outside of the range of the fire.
