iv, [4], 268 pp. (8vo) original blindstamped brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt. First Edition, later issue.

This copy with frank signature of Stephen A. Douglas clipped from an envelope and mounted on the front pastedown. Also mounted on the front pastedown is a slip of lined paper with Abraham Lincoln's name written in ink, bout not thought to be his signature. Between the two is the engraved bookplate of Henry C. Bernheim. On the following three blank pages are mounted a dozen news clippings relating to Lincoln and the 1860 election. The book is a later issue, with a printed rule above the printer's name on verso of title page and without the numeral "2" printed on the lower margin of p. 17. Contains five speeches by Lincoln and three speeches by Douglas, also a correspondence between the two before their famous debates, and seven debate speeches from each including one rejoinder speech made by Lincoln and then Douglas throughout the seven debate speeches. Howes calls this "historically the most important series of American political debates." Howes L338.

We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS Priority Mail.  For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
