Revelatory tribute to the German America printer and journalist John Peter Zenger (1697-1746), who began publishing the New-York Weekly Journal in 1733, only to be accused of libel the following year for comments critical of the colonial governor of New York, William Crosby. Zenger's lawyers, Andrew Hamilton and William Smith, Sr., successfully argued in court that truth is a defense against charges of libel. The original issue of Zenger's newspaper, inserted preceding the title page, is Numb. XLV, Sunday, September 9th, 1734, 4 pages (some foxing/darkening, to the top 1" of the margin of the first leaf is trimmed). The book itself is quite scarce outside of institutional libraries; nearly half of the 99 copies printed are located by OCLC as residing in libraries. This copy not numbered.
