[​72], 1448; [8], 1660 pp. Volume 1 with engraved frontispiece after C. Lebrun, pictorial head-pieces and large figured initials, several ornamental head- and tail-pieces; large engraved. folding plate in Vol. 2, 3 almost full-page engraved. portraits, a few small text-woodcuts.. ​(Folio) 40x24 cm (16x9") early full calf, raised spine bands.

With the bookplate of The Earl of Roden, and the signature of English politician Arthur Stanhope (1627-1694) at the top of each title page. First edition of this publication of earliest texts and statutes pertaining to the Merovingian and Carolingian rulers, "a landmark in the history of early medieval law". Etienne Baluze (1630-1718), historian and librarian to Jean-Baptiste Colbert for thirty-three years, was professor of canon law at the Royal College, later its director.

Lot Amendments
Wear and soiling to bindings with rubbing to extremities, large chip to top of spine of Vol. 1, only remnants of spine labels remaining, joints and hinges cracked; small areas of wormhole damage throughout margins of Vol. 1, not affecting text, tear to front pastedown of vol. 2, a few scattered closed tears or chips to page edges, not affecting text; very good.

We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS Priority Mail.  For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
