Plates are numbered 1 to 73 in vol. 1, and 1 to 64 in vol. 2, but the single-fold plates bear 2 numbers and the 3-fold plates bear 4 numbers, according to the number of sheets composing the illustration. Therefore, with the frontispiece, there are 100 plates in the 2 volumes. Inigo Jones was the first significant English architect in the early modern period, and the first to employ Vitruvian rules of proportion and symmetry in his buildings. Critical opinion questions the validity of some of the attributions to Jones, as well as the accuracy of some of the representations.
