NAACP leader’s novel of Southern lynchings and ‘barbarities”, letter to a white reader
White, Walter F.
New York

Walter F. White. Typed Letter Signed (while Secretary of the NAACP). NY, October 21, 1926. To Marion Deane, Hampton Institute, Hampton, Va. 1pg.

A longstanding leader of the NAACP, who then led the organization’s campaign against lynchings and white mob violence in the South, White writes to a sympathetic white reader of his novel “Fire In the Flint”, a gruesome story of racial hatred, rape, suicide  lynch law in the rural South.

White recalls that Europeans were incredulous that the book could be based upon fact, asking, “Can it be really true that they burn human beings at the stake in your country? I would have given almost anything I possessed had I been able to say truthfully that it was not true....There are some people who believe that a problem can be solved by ignoring it. I seriously doubt whether a thing so serious as the so-called race problem can ever be met in that fashion. Yes, everything that is in ‘Fire in the Flint’ is true and I could give you a great deal more which would be even more painful and still remain well within the bounds of truth… of lynchings and other barbarities…”
